What Are Peptides? The Building Blocks of Your Body

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — basically small proteins. If a protein is a sentence, a peptide is a phrase. Your body makes thousands of them and uses them for everything: healing, hormone signaling, immune response, fat metabolism, even cognition.

The difference between a peptide and a "regular" pharmaceutical drug matters a lot:

How Peptides Work in the Body

Your body is a signaling machine. Peptides are one of the main languages. They bind to specific receptors on cell surfaces — like a key turning in a lock — and tell the cell to do something specific:

  • Growth Hormone Releasing Peptides (GHRPs like Ipamorelin) → pituitary makes more GH → repair + fat loss + sleep
  • GLP-1 Agonists (Semaglutide, Tirzepatide, Retatrutide) → satiety signaling in brain + slower gastric emptying → weight loss
  • Healing Peptides (BPC-157, TB-500) → promote angiogenesis, collagen, and tissue repair
  • Mitochondrial Peptides (MOTS-C, SS-31) → optimize cellular energy production
  • Cognitive Peptides (Semax, Selank, Dihexa) → modulate neurotransmitters, boost BDNF, improve neuroplasticity

Why Peptides, Not Pills?

Most peptides get chewed up by stomach acid if you swallow them — that's why oral versions (like oral semaglutide with a special absorption enhancer) exist alongside injectable forms. Some peptides survive orally; most need subcutaneous injection or intranasal delivery to get into the bloodstream intact.

The upside of needing injections: you get far more precise dosing. A 250 mcg insulin-syringe dose of BPC-157 goes exactly where it needs to. No guesswork, no half-life chaos from your gut.

The Grey Market Reality

Because peptides are hard to develop into FDA-approved drugs (see our FDA Approval Process article), most peptides sold online are unapproved. They're marketed as "research chemicals" — legally grey, usually from overseas labs. The quality varies wildly, which is why learning to spot bad actors is critical (see Spotting Scammers).

That said, many compounds with strong evidence — BPC-157, TB-500, Semax, even Retatrutide — have never made it through FDA approval, not because they're dangerous, but because the business case doesn't work. We cover this in detail in our FDA article.
